Allied Health refers to trained professionals who treat, manage, and monitor issues and provide advice to individuals on managing conditions at home.  They are an important sector of the healthcare industry and are a necessary step to help reduce medical intervention.

Allied Health is a wide and varying sector with a diverse amount of professionals and sectors. The Disability and Home Care Sector works alongside a great number of Allied Health Sectors.  

There are a number of different types of Allied health Services out there. They include: 

Art Therapy – Art Therapy is using art and creation to help aid in mental and physical wellbeing. It allows individuals to use various mediums to explore and express their feelings. 

Counselling – Where a professional and individual set time aside to talk and discuss and explore emotions or stressful feelings. The goal is to facilitate positive change and help manage emotions. 

Exercise Physiology – Exercise physiologists work with individuals focusing on  their fitness to improve their health or maintain good health. They help patients with heart disease and other chronic conditions, like diabetes or MS to regain their health.

Music Therapy –  Music Therapy is where individuals use music and music creation to explore mental and physical wellbeing. It can also be used as a form of communication or connection for those who have trouble expressing themselves. 

Occupational Therapy – Trained individuals treat, manage and assist individuals through everyday activities they cannot do themselves. They help develop skills, recover, and improve as well as help do assessment for assistive devices. 

Physiotherapy – Physiotherapy is treatment to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient’s mobility, function, and well-being. Physiotherapy helps through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and health and fitness. 

Podiatry –  Podiatrists are healthcare professionals who have been trained to diagnose and treat conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections.

Psychology – Psychologists can help diagnose, treat, and manage mental health conditions and work with clients to build more positive relationships. 

Speech Pathology – Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders. This can include difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice. 

Allied Health Professionals can help diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of conditions. They are an important part of the healthcare system and are essential when dealing with health.
