Each year the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is on the 3rd December. This day is to increase awareness, understanding and public acceptance of people with a disability while celebrating their achievements and contributions.
In Australia services like the NDIS help empower Australians living with a disability, but with 1 in 5 Australians living with a disability, this service doesn’t cover everyone. By raising awareness and making conscious efforts for a more inclusive and accepting society, people with a disability will have foundations where they can thrive and live a life on their terms.
This year’s theme is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”. Accessibility needs extend beyond the home into schools, communities and importantly workplaces. The day is all about developing a greater understanding in the community that not all disabilities are visible and accessibility isn’t limited to physical places. We need to think about employment practices, how we exist and how we make the digital world as accessible and accepting as possible.
