Good Nutrition is a key component of everyone’s life and a major factor in leading a healthy lifestyle. We know we need good nutrition to be healthy, but many are still mis-understood by what a Nutritionist does and how they can be beneficial for those living with a disability.

We sat down with Nutritionist & Feeding Therapist from tappON, Lisa Moane, to help explain and de-bunk Nutrition. Lisa has been a Nutritionist and Feeing Therapist helping individuals across the Illawarra better manage their diets. She believes in not only giving you the tools on what to eat, but also how to eat and better manage your food. She explains what her role is, and how you can get started.

What is a Nutritionist for someone who has never heard of it before?

I help people improve their lives and health by changing the foods they eat.  There is so much conflicting information on what to eat, and the simple reason is that there isn’t one perfect diet for everyone.  As a Nutritionist, I help people work out what the right diet is for them, as an individual.

Working with families I realise that knowing what the right food to eat is only part of the picture.  Getting children to eat the food is another thing.  As a feeding therapist, I coach families and help children increase the range and variety of foods they will accept.

How can individuals benefit from seeing a Nutritionist?

It is difficult to navigate all the nutrition information yourself.  I help people understand what foods will work for them, and what foods they should avoid for optimum health.

What does a typical session with a Nutritionist look like?

Your first session with me will be a fact finding mission, allowing me to gather enough information to design an eating plan that is right for you or your child.

In a typical feeding therapy session, we work through multiple foods in calm and playful manner to systematically desensitise the child to the foods.

How did you get into this?

I became a feeding therapist after working as a Nutritionist for several years, and realising I needed more tools in my tool box to help families improve their children’s diet.
